What is Erasmus+?

Erasmus+ is the EU’s programme to support education, training, youth and sport in Europe by providing funded opportunities to take part in courses, exchanges, and cross-country projects.

Staff from all Education sectors are eligible to apply for Erasmus+ grants to take part in training courses or collaborative projects as part of the Erasmus+ Key Action 2 programme.

Primary, Secondary school and Adult Education staff can apply for courses to improve their English language skills or to develop the teaching skills required to teach English in the classroom, or to teach their subjects through English to students whose mother tongue is not English.

Third Level academics, teachers and researchers can also benefit from the Erasmus+ programme by applying for Staff Mobility grants to participate in English language courses or programmes designed to develop academic writing, presenting or teaching skills. Third Level administrative staff are also eligible for Staff Mobility grants to attend training programmes to develop English language communication, business or team-building skills.

KA2 projects offer huge benefits to the European Education sector, inviting partners from across Europe to combine their expertise in innovative ways to promote the productive exchange of knowledge across borders. Projects inspired by the current Erasmus+ priorities – Inclusion and Diversity, Digital Transformation, Participation in Democratic Life, or Environment and the fight against Climate Change – are adding valuable insights in the field of youth and education work.

How does Erasmus+ Work?

The Erasmus+ programme provides grants to institutions and individuals to facilitate participation in training courses, exchanges and cross-country projects. Educational institutions such as universities, colleges, vocational, secondary and primary schools can apply for grants as institutions, and staff will then be invited to apply to take part in individual training programmes or to participate in project-based activities.

If you would like to apply for an Erasmus+ grant for staff training, please contact your institution’s International or Erasmus+ Coordinator for more information.

If you would like to participate in one of Atlantic Language’s Erasmus+ courses, please register with Atlantic Language using our Erasmus+ Registration Form for TEACHERS or for HIGHER EDUCATION STAFF. We will then confirm your place on a course with a Letter of Invitation or Acceptance. You may need this confirmation when applying to your institution for a grant.

When you apply for funding for an Erasmus+ course, your institution may ask you to co-sign a Mobility Agreement in which you must provide details of both the Sending and the Receiving Institutions, the learning objectives and outcomes of your course, and the signatures of your Erasmus+ / International coordinator and the Atlantic Language school director. You will find the course descriptions and learning objectives of all our Erasmus+ courses in the fact sheet provided in each course page on our website. If you email your Mobility Agreement to [email protected] we will return a signed copy to you as soon as possible.

What are the benefits of Erasmus+?

For teachers and Higher Education staff taking part in the Erasmus+ programme offers many opportunities for both personal and professional development:

  • Expand and develop your professional skills – English language fluency, communication skills, public speaking, pedagogical strategies, team building etc.
  • Study abroad in a new environment
  • Share knowledge and expertise with partners from other countries and cultures
  • Experience a new culture
  • Networking – make valuable professional contacts with fellow educational staff from across Europe

Who is eligible to apply for Erasmus+ funding?

Erasmus+ offers mobility and cooperation opportunities for teachers and staff from the following sectors:

  • Higher Education
  • Vocational Education and Training
  • Secondary and Primary Education
  • Adult Education
  • Youth
  • Sport

Staff from all these sectors can apply for an Erasmus+ grant to participate in training opportunities abroad.

Atlantic Language offers training programmes for staff working in Higher Education institutions, for academic and teaching staff, and for administrative and support staff.

We also provide courses for teachers, principals and staff working in Adult Education Colleges, Vocational Schools, Secondary and Primary Schools.

How to apply for Erasmus+?

If you want to take part in an Erasmus+ course you will have to apply through an organisation such as your university, school, training centre etc. Ask your organisation if they are part of an Erasmus+ project or if they are applying for a project grant.

If your organisation has an International Office or an Erasmus+ Coordinator they will be able to provide you with this information and explain the application procedure.

Usually, as part of the application, you will have to show that you have been offered a place on a suitable Erasmus+ course. Atlantic Language is happy to help with this by providing a Letter of Invitation to Erasmus+ participants who register for one of our courses.

What countries are eligible for Erasmus+ funding?

  • All EU Member States are eligible to take part in the Erasmus+ programme.
  • In addition certain countries who are “associated” to the programme can also take part: Members of the European Economic Area (EEA): Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein;
  • Acceding countries, candidate countries and potential candidates: North Macedonia, the Republic of Turkiye, and Republic of Serbia

How much is an Erasmus+ grant?

Erasmus+ grants provide a contribution to your costs for travel, subsistence and training and the amount will vary depending on:

  • The receiving country (the country to which you are travelling)
  • The level of demand from staff from your country who intend to train abroad
  • The distance between your country and the receiving country
  • The availability of other financial sources in your country or region

Please ask your Erasmus+ coordinator or the responsible person in your school for information about the grant provided in your region.

If you need more information about the costs of Atlantic Language courses please find our Price List HERE and if you have questions about the expenses involved in travelling to Ireland, CONTACT US.

What is an Erasmus+ Course?

An Erasmus+ Course is a training period lasting a minimum of 2 days, excluding travel time, for which you can apply for funding through your organisation.

Atlantic Language provides 5-day training courses designed for teachers and higher education staff who wish to travel to a programme or partner country as part of the Erasmus+ programme.

Before beginning your training, the sending institution (your university, school or other organisation) and the receiving institution (in this case Atlantic Language) sign a Mobility Agreement which outlines your learning goals, rights and responsibilities.

What is Erasmus+ KA1?

Erasmus+ Key Action 1 or KA1 refers to actions which support the Learning Mobility of Individuals.

Organisations active in the fields of education, training and youth will receive support from the Erasmus+ Programme to carry out projects promoting different types of mobility. The following types of MOBILITY PROJECTS are supported under Key Action 1 of the Erasmus+ Programme:

In the field of Education and Training:

  • Mobility projects for higher education students and staff
  • Mobility projects for VET learners and staff
  • Mobility projects for school pupils and staff
  • Mobility projects for adult education learners and staff

Erasmus+ KA1 supports higher education teaching and administrative staff to take part in professional development activities abroad as well as staff from the world of work to teach and train students or staff at higher education institutions. These activities may consist of teaching as well as training periods (such as job shadowing, observation periods, training courses). Furthermore, this action supports blended intensive programmes, allowing for groups of higher education institutions to jointly develop blended mobility curricula and activities for students as well as academic and administrative staff. Please see HERE for further information

This action also supports schools and other organisations active in the field of school education that want to organise learning mobility activities for school pupils and staff. A wide range of activities are supported, including job shadowing and professional development courses for staff, individual and group mobility for pupils, invited experts, and other activities. Please see HERE for further information.

What is Erasmus+ KA2?

Erasmus+ Key Action 2 or KA2 refers to actions based on cooperation among organisations and institutions. Participating organisations will submit together an application to fund a project based on the CURRENT PRIORITIES of the Erasmus+ programme.

Such projects are expected to contribute significantly to these priorities, to bring positive and long-lasting effects on the participating organisations, on the policy systems in which such Actions are framed as well as on the organisations and persons directly or indirectly involved in the organised activities.

This Key Action is expected to result in the development, transfer and/or implementation of innovative practices at organisational, local, regional, national or European levels.

Depending on the field addressed and the type of applicant, these actions are managed either by the National Agencies or by the European Education, Audio-visual and Culture Executive Agency (EACEA). All details about who can apply and where to apply are specified in the sections below. Please see HERE for further information.
